What is Betnovate?

Betnovate belongs to a group of medicines called steroids. These medicines reduce the swelling and irritation associated with certain skin conditions.

It contains the active ingredient betamethasone valerate 0.1% and is available as a cream, ointment, lotion and scalp application. This treatment is also available under the names Audavate cream and Betamethasone valerate cream, manufactured by various companies.

All forms of Betnovate are effective when applied correctly. For moist skin conditions, creams and lotions are the most suitable. Whereas, for dry, scaly skin conditions ointments may be more appropriate. For hairy parts of the body, lotions are recommended.

What is Betnovate used for?

Betnovate helps reduce the redness and itchiness of certain skin conditions, such as:

  • various types of dermatitis (atopic dermatitis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, and neurodermatitis)
  • eczema
  • psoriasis
  • prurigo nodularis
  • discoid lupus erythematosus
  • insect bite reactions

It is usually used when milder steroids have not been effective in treating these conditions.

How does Betnovate work?

Betamethasone valerate is classified as a ‘potent’ steroid. When applied to the skin, it has several effects, such as:

  • Anti-inflammatory effects, this reduces inflammation, redness, swelling, and skin irritation.
  • Suppressing the immune response in the skin. This is helpful in conditions involving an overactive immune system.
  • Preventing the excessive growth and division of skin cells.
  • Causing the blood vessels to narrow. This is useful in reducing redness and swelling of the skin.

How should I use Betnovate?

To apply this product:

  1. Wash your hands.
  2. Apply a thin layer to the affected area(s) once or twice a day. Gently rub it into the skin until it has all disappeared. You can measure how much Betnovate to use for different parts of the body by using fingertip units. This picture shows one fingertip unit.
  3. Unless you are meant to apply Betnovate to treat your hands, wash them again after using this product.

Your doctor will tell how how often to apply this product and for how long to use it. Treatment with betamethasone valerate should be gradually stopped once your skin condition is under control.

Can I use this medicine?

Most people can use Betnovate. However, it may not be suitable for everyone.

Do not use this:

  • if you are allergic to betamethasone valerate or any of the other ingredients in this product
  • for children under 1 year old
  • to treat any of the following skin problems, as it could make them worse:
    • acne
    • rosacea
    • dermatitis around the mouth (perioral dermatitis)
    • itching around the perianal or genital area
    • on areas of skin infection (unless it is also being treated with an anti-infective medicine)
    • on itchy skin which is not inflamed

What precautions should I take?

To avoid an increased risk of side effects you should not:

  • have previously had an allergic reaction to another steroid
  • apply this product underneath airtight dressings
  • use this product for any chronic leg ulcers
  • apply this to a large area of the skin
  • apply this on broken skin or within the skin folds
  • apply this near the eyes as it could cause cataracts or glaucoma if it repeatedly enters the eye
  • apply this to areas of thin skin such as the face unless advised by your doctor

Do not smoke or go near naked flames when using this medication as it contains ingredients which are flammable and have a risk of causing severe burns.

If you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor for advice before using this medicine.

Does it interact with other medications?

Tell your doctor if you are currently taking or might take any other medicines, especially if you are taking ritonavir and itraconazole. These medicines may increase the risk of experiencing side effects.

Also, inform your doctor if you use any other corticosteroid medicines.

What are the side effects of Betnovate?

Like all medicines, Betamethasone can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The most common side effects include a feeling of burning, pain, irritation or itching where the product is applied.

You should stop using this product and contact your doctor immediately:

  • if you find that your skin condition gets worse
    • you develop a rash
    • your skin becomes swollen during treatment.
  • if you have psoriasis and get raised bumps with pus under the skin

If you experience any side effects that worry you, talk to your doctor. For a full list of side effects, refer to the medication leaflet included with your order.

If your condition comes back shortly after stopping treatment (within 2 weeks), do not restart using this product without consulting your prescriber.
